VICTOR VONICO JOHNSON - PROFESSIONAL SPEAKER & BUSINESS COACH
We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Victor Vonico Johnson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Victor Vonico below.
I love this question. Self-discipline is something that I have cultivated over many years and continue to enhance my self-discipline. Self-discipline is the ability to fight through how you feel about doing something and deciding to get it done anyway. It is getting out of bed when your mind and body are saying, stay in bed. It is deciding to stay home to work on an important project when all your friends and family want you to go hang out.
I, first, developed self-discipline through my grandmother, Pearlie Mae, enforcing me to make mu bed every morning. I remember being 11 or 12 and getting out of the bed to go straight to the kitchen to eat, when I was stopped by her disapproving facial expression, and her pointing to my room. In those early years, it was a struggle to make my bed every day. Now, as a middle-aged man, I still make my bed every day. As the years when by, I was able to transfer that self-discipline to other areas of my life, from, my work ethic, to my workout routines.
Here are 3 tips to develop self-discipline:
1) Create a daily routine that includes tasks that you MUST get done. By making them a daily routine, it takes the emotion of not feeling like doing it away, and you just tell yourself, this has to get done every day.
2) Develop an environment that supports your self-discipline. If you want to ensure that you exercise every day, place a couple dumb bells near your bedroom door so that you are encouraged to lift them to leave the room, and do a few curls or squats. If you need to complete a work assignment, remove anything on your desk that is not helping you or that will distract you.
3) Find an Accountability Partner or Group that will encourage you, daily, to get things done. This person should be someone that cares enough about you, to see you complete important tasks and they will nudge you to get them done.
Bonus: Listen to Guided Meditation Videos on YouTube by searching: ‘Self-Discipline Meditation’. Find a good one and listen to it a few times each day. This will help develop the mindset needed to build a stronger self-discipline characteristic.

Another great question. Three qualities or areas of knowledge that I would share to help those early in in their journey, would be:
1) Believe in yourself! It sounds cliche’, but if one can muster up the belief within themselves that they can achieve anything that they commit themselves to, it makes the journey more achievable, and opportunities began to attract to you.
2) Fully Commit. This means do the research, meet the people already doing the thing, go to the seminars, do the work, practice the skill, make the mistakes, learn from the mistakes, but be fully committed, and the odds of success are greatly improved.
3) Do not be afraid to fail. Failure will occur more than victories, IF we are putting in effort. What many people do not realize is that the failures, mistakes, and disappointments come with learning lessons. Every experience we encounter should be viewed as an opportunity to learn something new. Failure is not to be avoided; it is a mandatory step in the process of goal achievement. Do not let it stop you. Keep going!
I will suggest two books to help with personal development.
1) The Power of One More by Ed Mylett, Jr. – This book stresses the importance of always doing one more thing. If you are working out and want to do 20 pushups, do 21 instead. If you are in sales and need to make 50 calls, make 51 instead. The compounding benefits of CONSISTENTLY doing one more than planned, leads to tremendous success in our life. We rarely see the improvement on a daily basis, but over time, the results are amazing.
2) Proven Pathways to Wealth & Happiness by Victor Vonico Johnson – This book walks the reader through some of the financial challenges that I faced on my journey and shares how I overcame them through positive daily habits, committing myself to goals, building mutually beneficial relationships, and taking control of my finances and credit. A MUST READ for young adults and adults dealing with some of these challenges.
