Introduction:
According to a report by the National Women's Business Council, in 2021, there were an estimated 12.3 million women-owned businesses in the United States, and 42% of those businesses were owned by women with children under the age of 18.
Clearly, women owned businesses are a huge part of our society. As if being an entrepreneur was not tough enough, many women entrepreneurs are also juggling their finances, relationships, being caregivers, assisting in their communities, churches, and school districts. So, today, we wanted to provide 7 tips that may relieve some of that pressure, or at least offer suggestions for balancing some of it out for mompreneurs.
With that said, here are 7 tips to help mompreneurs manage their businesses, finances, and households! 👊
Make a to-do list and prioritize the most important tasks. This will help you manage your time more effectively and reduce stress. Use tools like calendars, planners, and project management software to help you stay organized. A few of my favorites are Calendly for managing my calendar, Todoist App for managing a 'to-do-list' and setting reminders in my Productivity area of my iPhone.
It's important to set boundaries between your work and personal life. Set specific work hours and communicate them with your family members. This will help you be more productive during work hours and avoid distractions. This one is hard for mom's because they have some many answers for us all, but to maintain your own self-care, this is a MUST.
Consider outsourcing tasks that can be done by someone else, such as cleaning, grocery shopping, or bookkeeping. This will free up your time and allow you to focus on your business and family. If you have teenagers, get them more involved, either with the 'to-do-list' or within your business. This will have a double benefit; 1) reducing the workload on you, and 2) tightening the bond between you and your teenager(s).
Keep track of your business and personal finances separately. Create a budget and stick to it. Use accounting software to help you manage your finances and stay organized. My favorite accounting software is Quickbooks Online. It allows me to easily categorize expenses and revenue streams, and I my accountant can easily manage compiling the tax returns. Also, for a more cost-effective tool, try money management apps like, Mint, Personal Capital, or even check with your bank for tools.
Take time to recharge and take care of yourself. This can be as simple as taking a walk or practicing meditation. Taking care of yourself will help you be more productive and reduce stress. Who doesn't enjoy a nice massage or pedicure from time-to-time. Your health is most important, or nothing else gets done. Need a shot of inspiration? Connect with other mompreneurs in your community or online. Join a support group or attend networking events. Having a support system can help you stay motivated and provide valuable insights and advice. So many people are dealing the same challenges, and you may get great advice from others', or better yet, you could support someone else's journey.
As a mompreneur, you will face unexpected challenges and setbacks. Be flexible and adaptable and be willing to adjust your plans as needed. Remember that every challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow. Don't forget to recognize how far you have come. This is important. Oftentimes, we get caught up in comparing ourselves against others that we see that may appear to be further along than us. I believe that we are happiest when we acknowledge our own growth and keep pushing forward.
